Shaan Syed is a Canadian artist currently living and working in London. His work is getting a lot of attention and everything we have in his current show in the gallery sold to very important collections. Saatchi decided to have a very important presentation of his work in their next show opening at the end of the year. He treats the canvas as a barrier in these large-scale paintings by thickly brushing across the surface in bold wipes. Within this recent body of work, his use of filler has become much more prominent, literally filling more and more of the surface area. His calligraphy-based prints play with our notion of text. Syed is influenced by his Islamic heritage, which has informed his practice as it inherently contrasts with the traditional paradigm of Western abstraction. The repetitive, almost meditative, effect of the commonplace words hand-written on his screen prints embraces a rhythmic poetry also found in the color-based paintings. undefined
