Susanne Mitchell is a contemporary visual artist. Her practice draws from her life experiences traversing continents and cultures between Africa and the United States. The works contains figurative elements and range from large-scale, mixed media drawings to intimate, miniature paintings and often integrates photography and printmaking. Through these media she examines and recombines various materials and images, which become a lexicon of signifiers that reference the current human condition as it is affected and informed by history, socio-economic systems and place.
Born in New York in 1973, Mitchell received a BFA in painting and drawing from California College of the Arts and an MFA in printmaking from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She has served as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Art at Metropolitan State University of Denver and as a Lecturer of Art at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Craft and Folk Art Museum (Los Angeles), the Academy of San Carlos (Mexico City), the National University of Colombia (Medellín, Colombia) and the Central Academy of Fine Arts (Beijing, China). undefined
