Les Tres Riches Heures du duc de Berry, April, 1412-1416

The Limbourg Brothers

The Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry or Très Riches Heures is the most famous and possibly the best surviving example of French Gothic manuscript illumination, showing the late International Gothic phase of the style. It is a book of hours: a collection of prayers to be said at the canonical hours. It was created between c. 1412 and 1416 for the extravagant royal bibliophile and patron John, Duke of Berry, by the Limbourg brothers. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tr%C3%A8s_Riches_Heures_du_Duc_de_Berry) The main subject of this painting is an engagement scene: in the foreground, on the left, a couple exchanges rings before 2 witnesses and another person, represented behind, smaller than the others. More in the center, 2 women pick flowers. To the right, one sees an orchard enclosed by walls and a building with battlements. In the background stands a castle, often referred to as the castle of Dourdan. It could also be the castle of Pierrefonds. (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/ ...
