Thérèse Schwartze became a celebrity. She was rarely in need of assignments, especially not when members of the Royal House also let themselves be portrayed by her - something that greatly contributed to her fame. She exhibited a lot, both in Europe and in the United States, and repeatedly received awards, such as in 1881 the Great Gold Medal of King William III. In 1896 she was the first woman to be appointed Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau. She was a member of numerous artists' associations, as well as jury and committee members. In 1888 she received the honorable invitation from the Uffizi Gallery in Florence to submit a self portrait. The portrait, on which she portrayed herself 'at work', garnered great admiration and won the Gold Medal at the International Exhibition in Paris in 1889.
