Virginia Colwell was born in Nebraska and spent her childhood in Puerto Rico and Virginia. Colwell did her undergraduate studies in fine art at Virginia Commonwealth University before moving to Barcelona, Spain to work with the Metropolis Masters Program in Architecture and Urban Studies. Her masters thesis examined the visual tropes of recent monument production and established a foundation for Colwell’s current investigation of the past through her art. While living in Spain she also worked as an artist and was awarded a two-year artist-in-residence at the multimedia art center Hangar.
Colwell works in a range of media including drawings, video, sculpture, sound art, and multimedia installations. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including in the United States, Spain, Mexico, and Germany. She has been the recipient of numerous awards such as the Leopold Schepp Foundation Scholarship for her studies in Spain, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellowship, the University Fellowship at The Ohio State University, and most recently a Jumex Foundation Grant. She currently lives and works in Mexico City. undefined
