Self Portrait

Vlaho Bukovac

It is a well-known fact that in Paris Bukovac met the then exceptionally distinguished and much appreciated painter and professor [Alexander Cabanel] at the École des Beaux-Arts and wanted to enrol in his class and study painting with him. But Cabanel could not admit him because the class was already full. Bukovac then came to an agreement with Cabanel that within a given time he would paint some work, and if Cabanel liked it, he would let him join the class. For this task he painted the painting Hand, which so delighted Cabanel he let him into the École des Beaux-Arts. The famed French painter had a major and important role in Bukovac’s artistic training, and the exhibition in the Art Pavilion will for the first time bring together the pupil and the teacher and give the public, the art history discipline and the media a clear picture of how much the teacher affected the pupil.
