The work contains the conceit of the large, framed mirror facing the window of Orpen’s studio. The plaster cast of Orpen’s Venus is also present. As it is seen by Orpen reflected in the mirror with which he also sees himself it is naturally reversed. It is one of Orpen’s self-portraits of the artist at work, with palette and brushes in hand.
