Artwork Title: Equestrian Self Portrait

Equestrian Self Portrait, 1987

William Robinson

William Robinson's self portraits have played a significant part in his artistic production since submitting his first Archibald Prize entry, William and Josephine in 1984. In 1987, Robinson rose to national prominence when he won the coveted portrait prize amongst much controversy with Equestrian Self Portrait. He subsequently won a second time with Self Portrait with Stunned Mullet in 1995—placing him in the exclusive company of Brett Whiteley as being the only dual winners of the prestigious prize to win with self portraits.
