Yasuo Kuniyoshi (国吉 康雄 Kuniyoshi Yasuo?, Born 1 Sept. 1893, Japan – 14 May 1953, New York); American painter, photographer and printmaker.
“Kuniyoshi remains one of our country’s most important and innovative modern artists, yet his work has not been widely exhibited for decades,”said Betsy Broun, The Margaret and Terry Stent Director of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. ”Kuniyoshi rose to prominence in the New York art world during the 1920s to become one of the most esteemed modernist artists in America between the two world wars, celebrated alongside artists such as Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe and Stuart Davis. During the course of his career his style ranged from deadpan humor toerotic sensuality to deep tragedy.

In 1948, Kuniyoshi became the first living artist chosen to have a retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
Kenneth Hayes Miller introduced Kuniyoshi to intaglio printmaking, and made approximately 45 prints between 1916 and 1918.[5] In 1922, he learned about zinc plate lithography and adopted the technique.
Kuniyoshi was also known for his still-life paintings of common objects, female circus performers and nudes. Throughout Kuniyoshi’s career he had frequent changes in his art: methods and subject matter.
