Dante Gabriel Rossetti was not particularly happy with Frederick Sandys’ depiction of Mary Magdalene: he felt it was too similar to his own painting Mary Magdalene Leaving the House Feasting, and accused Sandys of copying his representation of the saint. Personally, I am not convinced, but a later Rossetti painting does show how he himself went on to paint a depiction of the Magdalene in a cropped composition not unlike Sandys’.
