Like John Taylor Arms, Louis Rosenberg and Samuel Chamberlain, Geerlings was trained as an architect and later took up printmaking. This remarkable view of New York at night is done in pure aquatint without the assistance of etching to help define forms. [http://www.williampcarlfineprints.com/pieces/1175_Civic_Insomnia_(New_York)] Most urban landscape prints of this period were etchings. However, this is not the case with Civic Insomnia. To achieve the atmospheric effect in the view of the night skyline from across the river, Geerlings used a large watercolor brush to spread the acid and vary the length of acid biting time for each degree of blackness. The lovely dark night with beautiful gradations is unique to his work. [http://grolierclub.omeka.net/exhibits/show/the-grolier-club-collects-ii/prints--drawings----other-work]
