Three Pelicans and Sailboats demonstrates Peterson's dexterity with watercolor and gouache, as well as her keen sense of humor in rendering the trio of birds boldly meeting the viewer’s gaze, each sizing the other up. Peterson began spending time in Palm Beach in the late teens, and helped found the Palm Beach Country Art Club (later called the Palm Beach Art League) in 1918.
