Three Pelicans and Sailboats demonstrates Peterson's dexterity with watercolor and gouache, as well as her keen sense of humor in rendering the trio of birds boldly meeting the viewer’s gaze, each sizing the other up. Peterson began spending time in Palm Beach in the late teens, and helped found the Palm Beach Country Art Club (later called the Palm Beach Art League) in 1918. Over the next few decades, she became a familiar face to fellow snowbirds escaping the winter cold, creating and exhibiting her boldly-colored paintings of Florida’s crystalline waters, swaying palm trees and tropical flowers and birds.
