Margaret Oliver Brown (née McDonald) first studied at the Glasgow School of Art in 1927 as an evening class student. She attended further evening classes through the 1930s and in 1939 moved to day classes. In her final year of study, 1940–1941 she undertook portrait painting and this study may date from this time.
