From 1930-1931, Delaunay completed a majestic group of 3 abstract paintings entitled Rythme. Joie de vivre. The series would mark a turning point in his career as an artist and the zenith of his pictorial style characterized by a cosmic universality and a lyricism whose sheer power has rarely been equalled.... The composition of Rythme. Joie de vivre is arranged around a large concentric disc that occupies the background of the painting: recalling Formes Circulaires and Disque from 1913, here Delaunay dispenses with any reference to the external world in favour of a pure, musical game of colours. The concentric circles of the large disc, divided into 4 equal segments, distribute non-complimentary colors such as yellows and oranges, and different shades of green, blue and red.
